CV writing to win the job!

Measure for Measure

James, a job seeker, asks: what’s the best way in CV writing to win the job?
In answer:
Simply, read the job advert:

  1. Read the job advert. Ignore titles, look at the details of what the require in Skills, Qualifications and Experiences and the salary: can you meet the minimum SQE requirement; is the salary above what you need?
  2. Read the job advert three more times. If it still appeals, cut it out or print it out on a piece of paper
  3. Take a highlighter pen, and find the Skills, Qualifications and Experiences requirements listed. You should find at least five, more often over ten
  4. Taking the first five SQE’s, and all the qualifications, find the exact same SQE’s in your CV
  5. Can’t find them, or couldn’t modify something – without lying – in your CV? Don’t apply!
  6. If you can find them in your CV, then apply
  7. Take the same list of SQE’s and repeat them in your Cover Letter. The simplest version is a list of “You want” and “I offer” but find find a more letter-writing form to create it in
  8. Get at least three friends, including one woman, to read your job application against the job advert
  9. Make appropriate adjustments in light of their feedback
  10. Make sure your application reaches the employer at least 2days before the closing date – ring to confirm

Good Luck!
