Employment Gaps
Sam, an Assurance Associate at PWC, asks: My last date for an employer was August 26. Can I put on my CV that I worked from Sep 2007 to Sep 2009 as the dates? Since I worked pretty much all of August, is it OK to have these these dates on my CV?
In answer:
Honesty is always the best policy, particularly in CV writing. Further, your current title is Assurance Associate at a well known group of global accountants. Assurance is defined in the dictionary as a guarantee, solidly correct: a self answering question really.
Hence the best answer to your question of reducing your Employment Gap is exactly what you would expect from a person asking you to hire them: be truthful. By saying September 2007 to August 2009 you are not saying when you started in September (could have been the 30th) nor are you saying that you left on the first of August 2009.
If you put in anything to do with September as your end date, then two issues on top of the lie which could affect your long term employment prospects:
- Your professional training record would then disagree with the time line of your CV, and that’s a huge sign for a background check failure
- If you were in Europe, then your employers side documentation (P60 in UK), would tie up with your tax records, but not your CV – another background check failure.
Always make the right and verifiable choice in CV Writing. Further, in this current climate there is no shame in a month or two of unemployment.
Good Luck!
