Spaceship in the Ceiling

Ben asks: Should paper acknowledgements / book profiles go in a CV? I have been thanked and acknowledged in several academic papers that my colleagues have written. I am wondering if this information should go in my resume, and if so, where, and what should it look like. Along the same lines, I have been profiled in a book, which I also think is noteworthy.

In answer:

You are not going to like this Ben – it depends! The Professional CV Writing question of depends is based purely on relevancy to the job being applied for. For instance:

  • You are applying for a job in nuclear physics, and your acknowledgement/reference is in help with putting together a fantasy novel encyclopaedia. The reference is irrelevant, the answer is hence no
  • You are applying for the job of a book review magazine, and as before your acknowledgement/reference is in help with putting together a fantasy novel encyclopaedia. The reference is relevant, the answer is hence yes

A Professional CV should be a short document of maximum two pages in length which demonstrate credibility+ as an applicant to justify to the recruiter or HR professional further investigation by picking up the telephone

I would suggest that you only include the highlights of your own published works, and offer a full list if people wish to take the application further. On top of the list of published works, conference papers, book reviews, etc. there are hundreds of citations, but it would not be considered a constructive use of space to list them. There are citation resources that would allow people to check the current number. If you have not been cited in peer-reviewed publications but merely mentioned, this is of marginal utility in some contexts. In others, it may have relevance to demonstrate your prestige and standing among peers.

Good Luck!
