Simon asks: As an employer or recruiter, what do you prefer to receive? An Application Letter, a CV or both? As a coach, I have been asked these question by many job seeker:

  • What a typical employer / recruiter likes to see first and why?
  • If CV’s are used to eliminate the candidates and seldom read, why people send resume first?

My view at present is that:

  • Some believe, application letter is the only communication suitable till interview
  • Some believe, an application cover letter with a resume is a perfect way to communicate first time
  • Some believe, just dashing a resume (of any size, shape or style) should get the required response

What are your thoughts and recommend or practice?

In answer:
The simple answer, there is no one answer, so play the odd’s:

  • 1/3 will read the Cover Letter, before reading anything else
  • 1/3 will read the first half page of the CV/resume, before reading anything else
  • 1/3 will read the whole CV/resume

Most applicants will want to look professional, so always include a Cover Letter – it is also common courtesy to the reader.

The applicant should then concentrate their effort in writing engaging “why I want to work for you” statements in both their Cover Letter and Personal Statement, to gain in return a telephone interview.

Good Luck!
